Thank you so much for writing in. I absolutely feel your concerns here, and I’m really glad you wrote, because this isn’t the story I’m trying to tell. Whether or not it’s a “fetish universe and you shouldn’t be taking it so seriously” isn’t my main concern, it’s that I haven’t told the story I wanted to tell in the first place.
Emily’s home life should be strict (often VERY strict), but also fair and loving, and if the way my readers are interpreting it is as abusive, then that is 100% on me. I’m sure you know that I am actively re-writing a lot of my old stories, and (luckily for me) Emily’s parents don’t actually appear in all that many of them
I was planning on re-writing “Caught with a Toy” tonight and over the weekend anyway, and while that certainly has some strong humiliation tones, I hope that it falls sufficiently on the side of the ridiculous (Daddy Issues Cam) that it doesn’t make people uncomfortable. It is, I hope, so thoroughly separated from reality that it is obviously just smut and not based in any sort of real world.
The story that I think will need the most work is the two-part story “The Role Model”, which is the story I expect you have the most issue with. The story that I was trying to tell is a rather familiar one (to me) of parents blindly believing someone whom they themselves find admirable over the person (Emily in this case) who is telling the truth. I do understand that for a lot of people this may strike a little too close to home, and I should have been more sensitive to that while writing it.
The broad story itself as regards Emily’s interactions with Kaitlyn, I think can work, but Emily’s interactions with her parents, her feelings during her walk home, and the aftermath (it could desperately use a bit of loving aftercare) I think do need extensive rewrites if this is how my readers are understanding the story. Part of the fun of this series is that Emily isn’t some sort of special case, her parents are strict, but not hugely more than most other households, and certainly not abusive. If people are reading their relationship as abusive, that’s just bad writing, which as the sole author, does kinda fall on me to do better.
